Carstensz Pyramid Expedition - 14 days/13 nights

Carstensz Pyramid is also known locally as Puncak Jaya. Located on the Indonesia part of the island of New Guinea, it is considered the highest mountain of the Australia/Oceania continent. It’s the lowest of the “7 Summits” at 16,024 feet (4,884 meters) and is the only one that is primarily a rock climb. This expedition starts and ends in Bali on these dates:

Start Date: November 13, 2022
End Date: November 26, 2022

It was first climbed by Heinrich Harrer in 1962, who wrote his book, I Come from the Stone Age, about his 6-month expedition to climb Carstensz Pyramid and explore other areas of the region. Yes, that’s the same Heinrich Harrer that was the first person to climb the North Face of the Eiger and wrote the book: Seven Years in Tibet.

Only a few hundred people have climbed Carstensz due to occasional political instability and the fact that it is surrounded by dense jungle and the world’s largest open pit gold mine. These days, most climbers take a helicopter into and out of basecamp to make a quick trip of it.

We’ll be joined by the incomparable Dr. Werner Weiglein, who has a longstanding relationship with the local tribes, and decades of experience leading expeditions to Carstensz Pyramid and arranging the maze of permits and logistics to do this climb. Dr. Weiglein also knew Heinrich Harrer and co-authored books with him about the local cultures of New Guinea.

From basecamp, the mountain itself is climbed in a long day. It’s a 2000-foot rock face with lots of 3rd and 4th class scrambling with sharp, good climbable rock with places of low-to-mid 5th class difficulty.

The weather is typically good in the morning, but rains (or perhaps snow near the summit) starting in the afternoon. The weather could be good until the descent, but be prepared to climb in snow and rain, with your leather gloves being torn by the sharp rock. You may also get a view into the Grasberg mine–the largest open pit goldmine in the world!

We’ll be led by the founder of Red Lantern Journeys, Ambrose Bittner and the incomparable Dr. Werner Weiglein, who has a longstanding relationship with the local tribes, and has organized Carstensz expeditions for many years.

Carstensz Pyramid Expedition - 14 days/13 nights

The itinerary starts in either Jakarta or Bali where you’ll be picked up at the airport and transferred to the hotel. The domestic flight routes are currently in flux after Covid and currently it looks like Jakarta may be the best place to start because there is a direct flight to Timika and there isn’t a direct flight from Bali.  In any event, we will fly the next day to Timika on the island of New Guinea. There, we’ll spend time at the immigration office and the national park office signing documents, getting photos taken, and getting our permits. The following day we take a chartered helicopter flight to base camp.

Upon arrival in base camp which is at approximately 14,000 feet, we’ll hike for a couple hours and descend to a lake where we’ll camp at a lower elevation of about 12,000 feet to acclimatize for a couple of nights. We’ll then return to base camp and prepare for the summit climb.

We’ll spend 4 full days in basecamp. Each day is available to attempt to summit Carstensz Pyramid. If we’re successful on the first day, then the other days can be used to explore the area and climb other nearby peaks which are easy scrambles but very beautiful and interesting…including some of the last few equatorial glaciers in the world.

We’ll then take the helicopter flight back to Timika. If the current domestic flight schedules are maintained, then we take a domestic flight back to Bali the same day.

In the itinerary below, the arrival and departure dates are fixed, but other elements are subject to change based on local flight schedules, weather, security issues, and government restrictions. We’ve built in enough flexibility in the itinerary to account for most issues that we might encounter.

  • Day 1Nov 13: Arrive Jakarta or Bali

Arrive Jakarta or Bali and transfer to a hotel for check in.

  • Day 2Nov 14: Fly to Timika

Upon arrival in Timika on the island of New Guinea, we will transfer to the hotel and complete the necessary arrangements for the helicopter to basecamp.

  • Day 3Nov 15: Helicopter to Basecamp, trek to Meren Lake

Helicopter to Basecamp in the Yellow Valley at about 4,400 meters (14,400 ft), then trek about two hours down to Lower Meren Lake at 3,700 meters (12,000 feet) to camp and acclimatize for two nights. The trail is on good, rocky paths.

  • Day 4Nov 16: Acclimatization Day at Lower Meren Lake

Today is free to hike around the area to acclimatize.

  • Day 5Nov 17: Hike to Basecamp

Today, we’ll hike back up to basecamp in the Yellow Valley, set up camp. In the afternoon, we’ll have time to explore and check out the start of the route.

  • Day 6Nov 18: Climb Carstensz Pyramid

Today we’ll get up early–likely about 1 am to begin the climb for the summit. The climb consists of rock climbing on good but sharp rock up to mid-5th class and a cable bridge/tyrolean traverse near the summit. The descent involves many rappels and a lot of downclimbing. The climb and descent can take between 12 and 15 hours.

  • Day 7Nov 19: Weather Contingency Day

This day is reserved for another summit attempt in case of bad weather. If the summit was gained the day before, this day is free to rest or explore the area and climb other nearby mountains. Options include mountains such as Nanga Pulu, Wollaston Peak, hike to New Zealand Pass and the glaciers of Nanga Pulu, Mittelspitze Peak, Tsingta Peak, and explore the glaciers and summit Carstensz East.
